In 2022, I began researching methods to change the color of cyanotype prints using plants. In addition to their ability to change the blue tone of cyanotypes, plants reduce chemical exposure for the user, reduce chemical waste and are economically friendly. I have also been interested in how the plants physically become part of the artwork. The following works represent this research as they have all been botanically toned. The images are all exposed at various South Carolina State Parks, National Parks or Wildlife Refuges. The images represent my own reverence for nature and the symbolism it holds, whether personal, universal or religious. Several of the images were made in response to the passing of my colleague, Howard Frye. Table Rock State Park and Myrtle Beach were a few of his favorites in South Carolina. I appreciate how elements of nature symbolize a connection between earthly and our Creator. Initial research into botanical toning for cyanotypes was supported in part through a Florence Regional Arts Alliance Individual Artist Mini Grant.
