TWOFOLD FLOOD

The charming downtown area of Fair Bluff I so often frequent on the way to my parents’ home in North Carolina was victim to two floods from Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence. The Lumber River which brings such beauty to the area brought devastation to most of the downtown area. When I noticed new construction in the downtown area I wanted to document the buildings before further destruction occurred. The thermal dye sublimation image lift process results from soaking the print in water and lifting the image onto a paper substrate. The process felt like subjecting these places once again to a flood with results that feel like objects emerging, destroyed by water, yet saving the objects and spaces from being forgotten. Some of the image are displayed alongside images of the Lumber River drawing attention to the contrasting and reverential relationship we have with water.
